Why do I need an FDRP?
- A Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (also known as an FDRP) helps families resolve disputes about their children. An FDRP is an independent person who has special training and qualifications to conduct familiy mediations. They must also be accredited and registered with the Australian Attorney Generals Department.
- If you want to make an application to the Family Court for orders about your children (i.e. lives with, spends time with, holidays, schooling, etcetera), or want to make changes to current court orders, in most all situations you must attend mediation first with a FDRP and get a mediation certificate (known a section 60I Certificate) before you are able to start Family Court proceedings.
- Family Dispute Resolution can only be done by a FDRP. You can find an FDRP in organisations like Relationships Australia or Anglicare, or Legal Aid (NSW), or by a private FDRP.
- You can also settle property and financial matters this way too. It's easier, faster, and much less expensive than going to Court.
